Facial index
Face height from the bridge of the nose to the chin, as a percentage of cheekbone width. It is the oldest measurement on this list and the only one with a formal classification attached.
Also called morphological facial index, prosopic index, face length to width.
Reference range
None.
We have not validated a population reference interval for this photographic method. Published anatomical measurements do not automatically validate mesh-based estimates.
How we calculate it
One hundred times the vertical distance from the nasion landmark to the chin, divided by the distance between the cheekbone landmarks.
What moves the number
Head pitch changes apparent height; a raised or lowered chin moves this number noticeably. Hairline and jaw obstruction do not affect it, which makes it one of the steadier measurements here.
What it cannot tell you
The classes are descriptions of shape, not grades. A long face and a broad face are both ordinary, and the boundaries between classes are conventions of the scale rather than natural divisions.
